Pray for Ciudad Juarez: The Desperate City so close to us…

If you haven’t been tracking the news in the last year or two, the situation in the Mexican border town of Juarez is quite disturbing.  With homicides becoming a regular part of daily life for the citizens there, the local drug cartels are battling for turf control & the cost in lives has made Juarez one of the most dangerous places in the western hemisphere even the world.  Last week, 15 people were killed in a single day, including a 7-year old boy, three women, and  a university professor.  Even journalists aren’t safe, losing their lives at nearly twice the rate than reporters covering Afghanistan. 2,000 people have been killed in the city this year.  This narrated slideshow expresses the deep trouble Juarez is in…truly heartbreaking.

These remain our neighbors to the south, only a twelve-hour drive away.  As Henri Nouwen contended, we are intimately linked to the fate and spiritual life of our greater American family; our latin brothers & sisters to the south.  We @ WBCC have remained involved in projects in small ways in Juarez the last few years.  I’m reminded of that as a team from out of our church body heads down there next week to do Kingdom work! (Pray for them: Dave and Dora Larsen +Matt, Jacob and Josh.  Randy De Young + Rachelle and Riggs; John and Kerrie Trovingers + Luke, Jake and Zeb)  Pray that our eyes, too, are open to the suffering so close to home & the ways we could respond.  And pray for the peace of Christ to overcome Ciudad Juarez!

the hard path

hardpathSeveral weeks ago, we had a Sunday morning service revolving around the theme of suffering.  ’Where is God when it hurts?’ was a primary question in play.  Our good friends Jon & Julie Burns graciously shared their story, and the hard path they walked with their daughter Chloe’s leukemia.  This is really worthy to watch if you missed it… Probably the strongest stuff here is watching a husband & wife dialoguing so honestly about their pain, & hearing the very different ways they each continue to process together.  The live message portion is missing here, but if you really want to hear it, you can go to the WBCC site, and go under media : sermon archive : god loves us in the pain.

The Great Misfortune

In light of the message @ WBCC this morning, we thought we’d re-share a beautiful parable by Peter Rollins that we read a few weeks ago.  THE GREAT MISFORTUNE  looks more directly at how we can walk alongside those in suffering, rather than what our answer should be.  Enjoy:

6406-000008THE GREAT MISFORTUNE (from The Orthodox Heretic)

There was once an old man named Benoni who had known great misfortune through life, having lost his wife and children to poverty, disease, and war. The many lines on his face betrayed his pain, and his heart was filled with sorrow and regret. Indeed he barely had the strength to carry on.

But there was one who had drawn alongside him in his sorrow. His comforter was the village blacksmith, a strong but caring man who exhibited a gentle, humble, and charitable way of life. People knew very little about this blacksmith, as he was Continue reading ‘The Great Misfortune’

Highly Evolved Human: Thoughts for Tonight…

nickrossIf you haven’t heard, in place of regular group tonight, we’re headed downtown to see a show called Highly Evolved Human– it’s a one man show by Nick Ross that deals with his journey through cancer & treatment.  Cassie & I had the privilege of seeing the show in NYC this summer with my brother, Derek. Nick is one of Derek’s best friends (who he originally moved to Brooklyn with), and he has had a lot of success as an actor, writer & comedian.  For those coming tonight– I wanted to offer a couple thoughts & questions that I think will help frame why this isn’t just a well written show, but also a good opportunity for us to consider the themes of hope & suffering in our own lives & the lives of people we know.  So, if you’re coming, please read on!…. 4.20.99 part 3: joined in suffering

We’ve had a lot of response and heard so much conversation around the 10th anniversary, we’ve decided to continue through this week with different reflections on Columbine out of our group.  Today, Shaya looks back on the road of healing & the journey towards seeing suffering in a new light…

USA-CRIME/SHOOTINGSomeone told me a couple of days ago something that I had never thought of before in the 10 years that I have struggled with my experience at Columbine. She said that she saw my Makers thumbprint in my life, and that my gift, not my curse, was that I had joined my Creators yoke in suffering, but not in the way most people think of when they think of suffering.  Suffering to me meant dealing with all of the bad things that happen to you and that sometimes it just happens more to some people than others. My friend helped me to see that while yes, suffering is experiencing trying times in our lives; it is so much deeper than that alone. Suffering is also Continue reading ’4.20.99 part 3: joined in suffering’
