speak deep

conversationAfter reading Soul Graffiti last fall, we have attempted to consistently follow up on the idea of  ”experiments in truth“.  The idea is simple:  We pick an action, specific or general, that relates to the way of Jesus, and then we invite each other to try it in the same time frame.  Here’s what we’re trying this week– Ryan Long explains:

As a group we have been discussing conversations Jesus had with people in the Gospel of John. Our experiment this week is to enter a conversation with a freind, co-worker,  family member, etc…and be intentional about sharing our faith with them.  Open up, be honest,  talk about life with God, go deep, and don’t hold back.  Next Thursday, be prepared to share your experience.

my beloved

Sorry we’ve been off of new posts the last couple of days!  This week, with the premiere of the video, we’ll be celebrating some of the new and old videos.  If you missed last Thursday, we shared a video from ’05 that had a deep tie to chapter 12 in Soul Graffiti, the story of Beryl.  The collaboration of Brandon, Kate, and Welborn brought us this beautiful video titled: My Beloved

This week, we will take on two chapters for Thursday night, including the beautiful story of Beryl in chapter 12.  There are some sweet parallels between this chapter and a video our good friend Ryan Welborn edited a few years ago.  We’ll be watching that video together tomorrow- but in the mean time, we asked Ryan to set us up for the reading this week with his thoughts.  Read on…. communion1

This Thursday will be a special night as we celebrate communion together.  That doesn’t mean we’re putting Soul Graffiti down, though!  We’ll still be covering Chapter 10, “Bread, Wine, and the Deeper Magic” the first 30 minutes of group.  Actually, the chapter inspired us to have some extended worship and communion in the library, which we will do later in the night!  To help you consider the content of the chapter, here’s Cassie Nason’s reflections… Continue reading ‘weekly soul . chapter 10 . cassie nason’

Inspired…

Each of us has our own way of expressing the way we perceive God and the world around us.  Scandrette, in this week’s Soul Graffiti chapter, says that “we were made to create goodness and beauty in the world, blurring the line between fine art and artful living.”  Here are a few artful expressions of faith straight from the West Bowles CG.

Sunday Morning – by Alissa Smith

The smell of must and dust and
hallowed redemption
meanders around faded blue
pews that creak,
Shhhhh,
as I slide in at the back.
The Holy Bible and the Worship Hymnal stand
at attention, side by side, in stolid salute
to the thumbs that,
with a wet lick,
peruse their pages.
Lowered lashes grace
pale cheeks, as dust and prayers
filter through fingers of light, falling
like early snowflakes, the ones
that come on the last day of October, before the night
of winter, when the air makes a freeze of your lungs.
Sacred words bounce from eaves to floor, and down
to me, in the blue pew
the one at the back,
that one that creaks,
Shhhhh.
