Peru Christmas Part 3: Possible For All of Us

All this week, we are sharing reflections & pictures from the team that just returned from Lima, Peru.  Their journey was part of an effort our community made to share gifts & hope with a community we’ve worked closely with for seven years.  After raising nearly $7000 between our group and others @ WBCC, we were able to buy Christmas gifts for kids in Lima, Pachacutec, and Iquitos.  We also bought two brand new moto-taxis as sources of income and employment for the church and those they reach-out to.  Finally, we completed funding several smaller infrastructure projects that weren’t yet finished at El Shaddai.

POSSIBLE FOR ALL OF US                                      Katie Cooper

I don’t think I knew what Peru would become in my life the first time that I went. I knew that I would enjoy it since I had done similar trips with the church in Mexico, but it has taken on a role in my life that I may not have anticipated early on. Now that’s not to say that every time I’m there I’m totally comfortable and at ease, or that I love every minute, because I don’t think that is it at all. But I fit in some way. I’m not always totally comfortable in my life here at home either, nor do I love every minute, but I have a role and a place here. There are obvious differences between the two, since my roots here have developed with friends and family for the twenty-four years of my life. Still I can’t help but feel that the bond that continues to grow with our friends at El Shaddai, this relationship we have worked for, hasn’t happened by accident. That even though I didn’t know what Peru would become, God obviously did. He must have had a plan for it. And for the record, Continue reading ‘Peru Christmas Part 3: Possible For All of Us’

Action Rewind 3: Cooper-thon

6156-000093Last Thursday, we heard from many voices on how & where we’re taking action for God’s Kingdom.  From group projects to simple individual convictions being lived out, we heard a lot of perspectives!  To recap– this week, we want to track back and remind you about what’s on the table, & how you could potentially be involved.

PART.three.Triathalon

katiemomOkay, this actually wasn’t something we shared about a week ago, but we probably should have.  Katie Cooper & Shaya Lawerence are both involved in a triathalon in Boulder this weekend to raise support for Katie’s mom.  In case you don’t know, Katie’s mom, Karin, is an 8 year survivor of Brain Cancer.  Katie describes the challenges of supporting her mom:

My mom, Karin, was diagnosed with brain cancer in October 2001. Though the cancer is gone now, it has left her with many life changing issues such as short-term memory loss, confusion, and unsteadiness, to name a few. Due to these issues, I schedule people to care for her during the days when my dad and I work and while I’m at school. As you can imagine, it is often difficult to come up with enough volunteers to cover five days a week.”

We think Katie & Shaya’s efforts are a part of kindgom work, as the apostle Paul reminds Timothy, If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith…”  (I Timothy 5:8:) Head on over to Katie’s site to learn more, and pray for their efforts tomorrow!

love, relationships & the church? PART 2

86736368We continue our series based on a recent RELEVANT article, which among other things, gave one man’s reflection on the scene of love and relationships in the context of the church.  Every day, we’re going to feature your responses to a set of questions on this topic.  The questions will remain the same, but each day we’ll have a different person respond.  Single, Married, and everything in between…. we’re hoping to create some meaningful dialogue and share some varied wisdom out of our community in this area! TODAY, Katie Cooper weighs in:

1. Describe for us generally your “status” (single, dating, engaged, married) and maybe your relationship story in a sentence or phrase (in a long term relationship, don’t date much, have gone out with lots of people, married your HS sweetheart, etc.)

Single. I have dated a little, but have really only been in one serious relationship.

2. What was your general reaction to Tim Holland’s experience in his relevant article, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye, Where Did it Go?”?

It is interesting to think about a guy’s perspective in the matter, and while I never really felt the “Kiss dating goodbye” movement was being pushed on me, I have heard different thoughts on what a healthy Christian relationship should look like. I’m glad that this sparked more questions about the possible long-term effects of such a decision . Continue reading ‘love, relationships & the church? PART 2′
