Peru Christmas Part 1: The Measure of Beauty

All this week, we are sharing reflections & pictures from the team that just returned from Lima, Peru.  Their journey was part of an effort our community made to share gifts & hope with a community we’ve worked closely with for seven years.  After raising nearly $7000 between our group and others @ WBCC, we were able to buy Christmas gifts for kids in Lima, Pachacutec, and Iquitos.  We also bought two brand new moto-taxis as sources of income and employment for the church and those they reach-out to.  Finally, we completed funding several smaller infrastructure projects that weren’t yet finished at El Shaddai.

THE MEASURE OF BEAUTY                                Cassie Nason

A dozen smiling Peruvian faces greeted us in the airport terminal in Lima…at 1 a.m.   I was the only member of our group who had not been to Peru before, and therefore hadn’t experienced the midnight greeting from Pastor Elsa and her varied crew of neighborhood kids and family.  It was also these smiling faces that were my last memory of Lima after our three-day whirlwind tour.   And I think there is only one word for these people I met there.   Beautiful.

Before I was able to absorb the beauty of the people I met in Peru, it’s important to relay to you my first impressions.  First of all, Continue reading ‘Peru Christmas Part 1: The Measure of Beauty’

snow upon the wilted gold

treeyellowa few weeks ago, as a reflection on Justin’s teaching of Switchfoot’s “New Way to Be Human”, we all improvised poems around the phrase “All Things New”.  One that got shared, written by Cassie Nason, captures that idea through nature and the change of seasons.  We thought it only fitting to post it here today, amidst the winter white and the apparent new season that is upon us….

snow upon the wilted gold
breaking the bow of autumn
does the muted limb
understand the sacrifice
of winter’s steady progress?
does the cooling kiss
bring excitement or mourning?
can we see a way to be
new again?
when all around a fog has settled
strangling
there is no protest
from the ash
only embrace
captivation
as the snow falls softly
down

songs that speak deep: double feature

Thursday nights, different people are sharing SONGS THAT SPEAK DEEP.  Tomorrow night, we get 2 songs that speak to our hopes in life, the dreams we chase, and how a new kingdom way could break in.  Justin shares on Switchfoot’s New Way to Be Human, and Cassie brings the soul of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car to the table.  Don’t miss dessert, discussion, live performances of the songs, and more.  Want to listen ahead?  Videos here, and lyrics below…

NEW WAY TO BE HUMAN words

04.20.99

obviously, yesterday was the 10 year anniversary columbine.  a lot of recalling & remembering for us who went through that time together.  if you didn’t get time to reflect, you may appreciate this collection of photos of Cassie Bernall that Jon Burns put together— these were pics that Cassie (Nason) took for a HS photo project.  She lost them, & didn’t find the negatives until years after Cassie was killed.  Needless to say, when we found them, they were overwhelming & powerful.  And still are.  Lift a prayer for the families who lost, the people who experienced trauma, and that God’s story can still be seen beyond April 20th, 1999

holy week 2: Children, instinctively curious

by Cassie Nason

To make of his story something that could neither startle, nor shock, nor terrify, nor excite, nor inspire a living soul is to crucify the Son of God afresh.     Dorothy Sayers / Bread and Wine

butterflyWe have two small plastic cups near the window in the 1st grade classroom.  Inside are six small chrysalises hanging suspended from the top of cup.  Days before they were squirming caterpillars, and days from now they will emerge as butterflies.  The kids in the class excitedly sidle up next to the cups, peering in, anxious to see if the “butterflies are ready yet”.  The transformation of caterpillar to butterfly is captivating.   The mystery of something so beautiful emerging from something so ugly and lifeless piques their imaginations.  I can hear it in the kids’ questions, “what’s going on in there?”, “what’s happened to the caterpillars?”, “have they died?”, “why are the butterflies taking so long?”.
