Peru Christmas Part 2: Finding Love in Lima

All this week, we are sharing reflections & pictures from the team that just returned from Lima, Peru.  Their journey was part of an effort our community made to share gifts & hope with a community we’ve worked closely with for seven years.  After raising nearly $7000 between our group and others @ WBCC, we were able to buy Christmas gifts for kids in Lima, Pachacutec, and Iquitos.  We also bought two brand new moto-taxis as sources of income and employment for the church and those they reach-out to.  Finally, we completed funding several smaller infrastructure projects that weren’t yet finished at El Shaddai.

FINDING LOVE IN LIMA                     Shaya Lawrence

As I reflect on this last trip to Peru, and on the Advent season I have noticed a common theme this year for me. I realize it is an often talked about theme, however it is one that to me is the most mysterious, most difficult to truly grasp, and one in which will take the rest of my life to seek and still may never comprehend even a little of what it is. The theme is Love. I have always truly struggled with this word/feeling/action contemplating; what does it mean to Love? Continue reading ‘Peru Christmas Part 2: Finding Love in Lima’

the eve of the day & south of the border

casasMerry Christmas everyone!  If you’ve been tracking the last few weeks, we’ve had posts centering around advent…  here we are a day away from Christmas.  This will be our final post for 2008.  We’ll be bringing in some new stuff in the new year and a lot of perspective from our own community.  We thought many of you would like this look at Christmas from south of the border (Mexico) featured at relevant- check it out here.   In similar news, we sent $500 of the over $900 we raised at our party down to El Shaddai in Lima, Peru yesterday!!!   Thanks everyone– the remainder of that cash will be covering the volunteer expenses at Safehouse.  A reminder if you check this today, there’s a service @ WBCC at 530PM which should be outstanding… See you all soon, and back here in 2009!

december eighteen & the truly poor

“No one can celebrate

 a genuine Christmas

 without being truly poor.

 The self-sufficient, the proud,

 those who, because they have

 everything, look down on others,

 those who have no need

even for God – for them there

 will be no Christmas.

 Only the poor, the hungry,

 those who need someone

 to come on their behalf,

 will have that someone.

 That someone is God.

 Immanuel. God-with-us.

 Without poverty of spirit

there can be no abundance of God.”

-OSCAR ROMERO

december sixteen & a prison cell

“A prison cell, in which one waits, hopes … and is completely dependent on the fact that the door of freedom has to be opened from the outside, is not a bad picture of Advent.”

German pastor and philosopher (1906-1945) imprisoned and executed for his attempt to overthrow Adolf Hitler.

december fifteen & hope has answered

We continue our varied advent entries with this video devotional from The Work of the People.  Further discussion of the short video is available here.

december thirteen & groves on songs

grovessara groves has been a very refreshing songwriter in the midst of an often very bland industry of christian artists. (if you heard Christie & Courtney a few weeks ago, that was one of her songs- “When it Was Over”)  This short Relevant interview offers her perspective on the Christmas season, mostly through the songs we often use to mark it.

We couldn’t get any of her new Christmas album to post– but here’s a music video off of one of her recent albums that you may enjoy….

december twelve & peace in a face

Mars Hill Church in Grand Rapids, MI (Rob Bell) is hosting an advent blog with works/reflections from people in their community as they practice Advent.  This picture was a post on their site a couple days ago, titled “Peace in a Face”.  You can check out more of the blog here…

mcknightScot McKnight hosts the blog Jesus Creed (http://blog.beliefnet.com/jesuscreed/).  He is hosting a series there titled the Acts of Advent.  Here’s a link to the first post from that series a little over a week ago.  If you like it, you can find more on his blog through the month!

december ten- a nouwen advent prayer

nouwen-3Lord Jesus,
Master of both the light and the darkness,
send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.
We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.
We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.
We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”
Amen.

-Henri Nouwen
