jennifer knapp comes out

if you haven’t tracked with the recent news about former christian artist Jennifer Knapp coming out as a lesbian, its grabbed a lot of headlines.  The first in-depth interview with her covering her exit from the music industry year ago and her recent return & “coming out” was in a recent issue of Christianity Today.   Many Christians, like Pastor Bob Botsford, have spoken out extensively against Jennifer’s position.  Others, like author Tony Jones, have expressed adamant support.  Meanwhile, artist Derek Webb has announced a tour with Jennifer this spring.   She also just appeared on Larry King Live in a very interesting interview.  A piece of it is below.  This remains quite an issue that the greater church in our time is contending with & that we must each work through individually and together.

acacia film fest 2010 starts this thursday!

our (sort of) annual film fest kicks off tomorrow night, with the 1986 film THE MISSION, starring Liam Neeson, Robert DeNiro, and Jeremy Irons! Craig will be hosting–but you can expect different teachers and movies each week.  If you don’t know how this works, we DO NOT watch the whole movie on Thursday…. so we encourage everyone to try and watch the full movie ahead of time.  7PM in the GP underground!  Here’s the trailer for the Mission:

zach williams: a beautiful performance

last week, several of us had the opportunity to travel to catalyst west in orange county, CA. it was a full experience– one moment captured here was the stunning performance by artist zach williams from Brooklyn, NY. Mat & I were particularly moved. I’ve since checked out his album, Storytime, which on first listen, is really solid too. Enjoy:

3 lies the church tells about sex…

relevantmagazine.com featured a short piece on their site this morning titled “3 Lies the Church Tells About Sex”.  Its really an excerpt from  an extremely helpful book by Lauren Winner titled Real Sex: The Naked Truth About Chastity.  Our Love & Relationship series is over, but this article covers several of the issues that were a part of Thursday’s this last month.  Well worth your reading &  continued consideration!

the future of worship music

some people ask what the future holds for christian songs & worship music in the church.  i present exhibit “A” as all we need to know.  Inside a minute, classy facial expressions, catchy melodies, and slick guitar playing.  Behold, the future:

“mayr-wage: that dream…within a dream”

Tonight @ ACACIA, we end our Love & Relationship Series.  7PM GP Underground, more details here.  We’ll be looking over a lot of what’s been covered this last 5 weeks, but especially the idea of marriage…. how can we approach it?  why is it a total fear or even waste-of-time in some of our minds?  why does it stand as one of the richest symbols of God’s love in the scriptures?  There’s so much that could be said tonight, but in reality, we’ll probably just loop the following speech all evening so that we can achieve full wisdom together:

how facebook killed the church

We’re obviously all well aware of the deep impact social network media like twitter & facebook has had and is having on greater culture & relationships.  What exactly is that impact?   While there are different thoughts & opinions on how these systems actually impact faith & even the church-  no doubt most will agree:  THERE IS AN IMPACT.   I found Dr. Richard Beck’s recent blog post titled, “How Facebook Killed the Church” an interesting read.  Don’t get fooled by the title, he’s not out to demonize Facebook at all.  But his observations are well worth your time if you have a minute.  One interesting quote:

But Millennials (generally those born after 1980) are in a different social situation. They don’t need physical locations for social affiliation. They can make dinner plans via text, cell phone call or Facebook. In short, the thing that kept young people going to” church, despite their irritations, has been effectively replaced. You don’t need to go to church to stay connected or in touch. You have an iPhone.”

How & where we maintain a real-time, face to face, faith community as we try to follow Jesus is an entirely new question for us to each consider!  The ground has shifted & we live in quite a fascinating time.  These are things we’ll all have to look at deeply together!   – Craig
