Back in the Saddle

Hey Everyone– we’re through making the domain & site transition to theacaciacommunity.com! You can now re-enter the site as depicted by this creepy picture.   It was a bit of a process & you’ll still notice some more design & general content changes in the coming weeks. The great news is we are able to host all of our old content from aforwarddesign.com here! Also, that old domain name will forward here….Best of all, we can get back to regular posts. Thanks to Chris for all his work on this!

A lot has been going on these last few weeks…. Lent has begun, marked by Ash Wednesday last week & a british newscaster who didn’t know why VP Joe Biden had a “Bruise” on his head. Awesome: The Olympics are winding down, and USA is still ahead in the medal counts!  If you missed some of the crazy crashes, you may want to check out the highlights here.  Nutty.

Back home, we’re praying for Kara Wester, who is arriving in Haiti today as part of a medical response team from Denver she partnered with.   Also, Thursday’s have been warming our hearts as we go through a Love & Relationships Series.  We’re talking it all from dating to gender roles to sex, and making the best connections we can to our faith.  By listening to the voices from our community alongside the scriptures, we’re having some really meaningful conversations and maybe even some wisdom & clarity!  This Thursday is no exception as we welcome our good friend Shauna Gauthier via Skype for some teaching & dialogue.  More to come on that soon!

Community & the Great Commandment

Religion and devout feelings are useless unless they are expressed in action and in truth, that is, in real community. (1 John 3:17–18) Jesus says, Love God! And the other command is exactly the same: Love your neighbor! There is no true love to God if it is not a true love to our fellow human being, and vice versa. (Matt. 22:36–39) This has been our experience: Community is possible through the Spirit that comes to us from God. It is when this Spirit fills us that there is true love or our neighbor and full community among us.”  -EBERHARD ARNOLD / September 1935

Following Jesus’ call places us on a direct trajectory towards one another.  This is the church–  a people, called out & called together, in order to witness and realize God’s love together.  But this isn’t a simple process.  We return again and again to figure it out in the messiness of life together.  We’ll gather as Acacia the next few weeks to explore this identity together.  If you’re around, we meet @ 7PM in the GP Underground @ WBCC!  Below, a reflection on some of the scriptures that speak on the church:

what's this you tube for?

Well.  It’s simple.  We’re talking about Songs that Speak Deep Thursday nights.   And it’s open to any songs that have moved people in their faith journey.  Ryan Long’s story is certainly a treasure in our community, and he’ll look into this particular Creed special to communicate that to us.  So, lay aside your Scott Stapp bias, and come hear where God’s Spirit has moved a heart among us!  Coffee, Dessert, & Dialogue served @ 7PM in the GP Underground, tonight…..

if you could see the stars…

UnChristian Stats: An Outside Perspective

200377572-001Tonight, we’ll take a look together at some stats but out by Gabe Lyons and Dave Kinnaman in their 2007 book UnChristian.  The thrust of the book comes from a gathering of statistics that show those outside of Christianity’s general perceptions of our faith & the church.  The verdict?  Not too pretty.  The general idea is that Christians are seeen as primarily judgmental, antihomosexual, hypocritical, too political and sheltered.  Perhaps not new or a surprise to many of us.  But what do we do with statistics like these?  Do we see them playing out with people we know?  How can they impact our faith community?  Where would Jesus lead us in such a time as this?   We’ll explore that together tonight… 7PM in the GP Underground (that’s the Lower Gathering Place).  Dessert, music, & more.  Here’s a short video about that book, and you can click here (UnChristian Data) to see the stats we’re looking at tonight!

what's your motivation?

tonight, we’ll dive into a discussion with Jesus and the crowds in John 6 as well as hear about $200 conversions via video with Peter Rollins.  The question at hand: What motivates you & I to engage Jesus and perhaps attempt to believe & follow him?  Since Rollins gives a lot to consider in just a couple minutes– here’s a look at the video that will be part of tonight.  Remember, we’ll also share about the group experiment from last week- see the previous post.  and see you tonight!

hear the voice: conversations with jesus

thevoicejohnTHIS MAY–  we’re going to be taking a deeper look at Jesus’ heart in the gospel of John.  As we’ve discussed our hopes & dreams as a group, we continue to come back to the Way of Jesus.  In order to look at Jesus with fresh eyes, we’re going to be reading The Voice of John: The True Story of the Last Eyewitness.  It’s a remix of John’s gospel written by Chris Seay that really brings strong life to the narrative.  We have copies for everyone— and we’re asking you bring at least $3 to cover the cost of the books for the group.  You can also read online here.  If you’re looking to dig into scripture in a new way, check out what other projects they’re doing with the Voice.  Read chapters 1-5 for Thursday night, come ready to engage, discuss, and learn the Way!   Don’t have the book yet & want one before Thursday?  Let Craig know: craignason@mac.com.
