starting this thursday & every 3rd Thursday, we’ll be feeding a fresh meal to some of Denver’s homeless teens through Drybones… here’s a look at some of the kids that participate:

film fest week 3: rocket science shines
Published 05/12/2010 Seasonal: Film Fest , What we are doing Leave a CommentTags: Film Fest, jeffery blitz, rocket science, ryan welborn, spellbound
This Thursday we’re continuing our 2010 Acacia Film Fest with Ryan Welborn hosting the independent movie ROCKET SCIENCE. This small budget, 2007 indie movie received warm reviews but didn’t succeed well at the box office. Directed by Jeffery Blitz (directed the documentary Spellbound), the flavor of the movie is similar to other “coming of age” movies like Juno or even Little Miss Sunshine. The story tracks Hal Hefner’s attempt to make it in the world of high school debate despite his own stuttering problems. Aside from a few unnecessary tangents, this movie really hit on all cylinders for me. Well acted, smartly written, and the ability to make you laugh & think deep. After hearing some of Welborn’s thoughts last night on what he’ll be sharing Thursday, I’m really excited for the whole group. I won’t spoil it, but I really hope you’ll all get a chance to join tomorrow & see the movie too! Here’s the trailer: -Craig

our (sort of) annual film fest kicks off tomorrow night, with the 1986 film THE MISSION, starring Liam Neeson, Robert DeNiro, and Jeremy Irons! Craig will be hosting–but you can expect different teachers and movies each week. If you don’t know how this works, we DO NOT watch the whole movie on Thursday…. so we encourage everyone to try and watch the full movie ahead of time. 7PM in the GP underground! Here’s the trailer for the Mission:

“mayr-wage: that dream…within a dream”

Tonight @ ACACIA, we end our Love & Relationship Series. 7PM GP Underground, more details here. We’ll be looking over a lot of what’s been covered this last 5 weeks, but especially the idea of marriage…. how can we approach it? why is it a total fear or even waste-of-time in some of our minds? why does it stand as one of the richest symbols of God’s love in the scriptures? There’s so much that could be said tonight, but in reality, we’ll probably just loop the following speech all evening so that we can achieve full wisdom together:
breakin’ up is hard to do

of course it is. and ryan plans on talking about it tonight @ acacia. but not nearly as hard as watching this music video on the subject from 1966. Classic. They need to bring this style of early music video back– from the clothes to the hand motions to the set to the in-studio crowd.
rewind with Shauna & dealing with our differences

This Thursday, we were fortunate enough to join our friend Shauna Gauthier via iChat for some extended dialogue concerning gender roles, societal messages, and how it impacts us. The content was deep & heavy to say the least! But I think anyone there would agree we were engaging some real wisdom with someone who has wrestled hard with these issues. Below is a piece of the conversation we had. You’ll hear the last 15 minutes or so from our full hour together- Shauna blogs regularly at thejourneyunknown, and you can contact her there. Thanks, Shauna!
tonight: shauna tackles the sexes

We’re really excited for group tonight as we continue in our series on love & relationships! We’ll be joining our good friend Shauna Gauthier via Ichat for a little video teaching & dialogue. Shauna used to run the show (practically!) in our group and some other areas @ WBCC! She is a great friend who is now living in Seattle, WA with her husband Brian and three girls while she completes her MA in Counseling Psychology @ Mars Hill Grad School.
Shauna will generally be unpacking how we see gender roles– but we’ll be looking at everything from biological/anatomical differences to social constructionist theories to approaching the Scriptures. If this all sounds foreign to you, or scary…. it may be because unfortunately this isn’t an area we go into all that often in the church! What we’ll hope to discover is that the views (we may not have realized) we have in this area have huge consequences in our everyday relationships- dating, marriage, or simply in the church. It’s going to be a real deep night, and we can promise a very open & direct approach with Shauna. Rated R? We’ll see, but your expectations of an “R” rating may be the exact kind of stuff we’re talking about…. You can find full details HERE!
