the future of rock & roll:
Shad’s new album just released. Fine hip-hop is alive. Excited after hearing this first track!
Today we take a look at the goings on with Russ, excuse me Ross Orpet, a Wyomingite at heart who turned from his roots to settle down into the “Centennial State,” or as we know it, Colorado. He shares a bit about himself here…
Strangely, the same day we kick off our Peru Christmas Fund Raiser, Balloon Boy stole the headlines… Coincidence? We think not. What does it all mean? We’re not sure. But if you haven’t seen Falcon’s follow up interview on the Today show, you’ll want to check this out…
In light of the message @ WBCC this morning, we thought we’d re-share a beautiful parable by Peter Rollins that we read a few weeks ago. THE GREAT MISFORTUNE looks more directly at how we can walk alongside those in suffering, rather than what our answer should be. Enjoy:
THE GREAT MISFORTUNE (from The Orthodox Heretic)
There was once an old man named Benoni who had known great misfortune through life, having lost his wife and children to poverty, disease, and war. The many lines on his face betrayed his pain, and his heart was filled with sorrow and regret. Indeed he barely had the strength to carry on.
But there was one who had drawn alongside him in his sorrow. His comforter was the village blacksmith, a strong but caring man who exhibited a gentle, humble, and charitable way of life. People knew very little about this blacksmith, as he was Continue reading ‘The Great Misfortune’
People want to see and hear stories and experience their own stories in the context of larger, maybe more dramatic, more explicit, or more intense ones… I am sure we all want to hear stories, from the moment we are born to the moment we die. Stories connect our little lives with the world around us and help us discover who we are. The Bible is a storybook, and the Gospels are four stories about the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus, who himself was one of the greatest storytellers. -HENRI NOUWEN Sabbabtical Journey
Give me courage to be fully alive today
To embrace this moment with destiny
To choose life, make beauty and risk love
with every thought
in every touch
with every word
in every act
with every breath…
in grateful submission
to the mystery
of being and belonging
to this people
and place
and to
you.-Mark Scandrette
still a classic.
First off, we’re all keeping our friends Brett & Emily Gauthier in our prayers– Emily’s brother, Matt, died yesterday. I’m reminded of how many times I’ve been close to tragedy or had friends and acquaintances who’ve suffered unexpected losses in their family. From the Columbine shootings, to peer suicides, to untimely diseases taking people, I sometimes think of how strange it is that I’ve been near death so often at the young age of 27, while a lot of people I’ve met have never had these types of events in their lives at all.
The perspective I’m always hoping to find is one of deeper clarity concerning the hope afforded to me in my faith. While Christian hope often reduces or simplifies the issues to “heaven” and “life after death”, anyone who has dealt in death (despite faith!) knows its not nearly so simple and clear. Death remains somewhat mystery despite what hope I find in Jesus. I’m willing to stand in that paradox! Noted New Testament scholar and Bishop NT Wright recently wrote a book called “Surprised by Hope” in which he unpacks some of the misunderstandings about hope within Christianity. His ultimate belief is that our hope beyond death as Christians may surprise us. I have to admit I’m still working through this book (he’s not the lightest writer!), but I find the issue very interesting! Below are 2 interviews Wright gave a short interview about the book. The first, a lighter one with Stephen Colbert. The second (available by link only), on ABC’s Nightline. (Which, despite some funky editing choices, is worth a watch.)
We love you Emily, and hope you & your family sense our prayers and find some hope amidst loss!
