Peru Christmas '09 $ Total & Plans

Gift Delivery in Pachacutec '07

An update on our fundraising totals…  As a young adult community, we raised over $2500! Well done everyone!!  Other groups & people in the church more than matched that amount, which is really incredible!  This is truly an effort that we’re all a part of…  Don’t forget, this Thursday seven of us head down to Lima (Pastor Evert, Craig & Cassie, Shaya, Katie Cooper, Kelly Shaw, & Chris Loar) to complete this project.  Our main goals will be 1.Purchasing gifts 2. Buying potentially 2 mototaxi’s as future sources of income for the church 3. Throwing christmas parties & giving out gifts & cards from our group in Lima & Pachacutec 4.Gifting funds to El Shaddai to finish off building work on the future drug rehab space.

We’re calling on everyone to join in committed prayer for this trip during the day on Thursday!  We’ll post details on everything we did starting next Monday and through that week!

a little early christmas treat from Bobby D

yes, it’s almost time to roll out the Christmas Ipod mix. And while the infamous Neil Diamond Christmas album remains an iconic piece of holiday music fabulousity, another rock icon is trying to get a piece of the action. That’s right, Bob Dylan released an album this month full of Christmas spirit. While we haven’t heard all the tracks yet, this video single “Must Be Santa” is simply…. bizarre & amazing. You be the judge….

Pray for Ciudad Juarez: The Desperate City so close to us…

If you haven’t been tracking the news in the last year or two, the situation in the Mexican border town of Juarez is quite disturbing.  With homicides becoming a regular part of daily life for the citizens there, the local drug cartels are battling for turf control & the cost in lives has made Juarez one of the most dangerous places in the western hemisphere even the world.  Last week, 15 people were killed in a single day, including a 7-year old boy, three women, and  a university professor.  Even journalists aren’t safe, losing their lives at nearly twice the rate than reporters covering Afghanistan. 2,000 people have been killed in the city this year.  This narrated slideshow expresses the deep trouble Juarez is in…truly heartbreaking.

These remain our neighbors to the south, only a twelve-hour drive away.  As Henri Nouwen contended, we are intimately linked to the fate and spiritual life of our greater American family; our latin brothers & sisters to the south.  We @ WBCC have remained involved in projects in small ways in Juarez the last few years.  I’m reminded of that as a team from out of our church body heads down there next week to do Kingdom work! (Pray for them: Dave and Dora Larsen +Matt, Jacob and Josh.  Randy De Young + Rachelle and Riggs; John and Kerrie Trovingers + Luke, Jake and Zeb)  Pray that our eyes, too, are open to the suffering so close to home & the ways we could respond.  And pray for the peace of Christ to overcome Ciudad Juarez!

attention men, and those who try to understand them

A few weeks ago, we were together in Siverthorne, and several of you took notice of an article that Ryan Long & I were reading.  The article, titled “Child-Man in the Promised Land“, by Kay Himowitz deals with the dramatic shifts we have seen in the maturation process for men once they hit 18.  ”Extended Adolescence” is a term many use to describe today’s young men, but this article goes much deeper into the world young men find themselves in today.  This article was a tough one on many of you ladies who took the time to read it.  I kept reminding the girls that these are simply trends we see… there are still good guys!

I have since realized that the article (which was part of an online class I recently finished on the emerging generation with Mark Scandrette) is an important one for many of you to read and consider.  It comes almost entirely from a non-faith perspective, but the implications for us as young adults with faith should be clear.  I’ve already had a lot of good dialogue about this, and look forward to more.  Gentlemen, you should Continue reading ‘attention men, and those who try to understand them’

songs that speak deep: final week

57519957Tomorrow night, Thursday, we gather for our final look at songs that speak deep.  Its one last double feature….  hosting this week are Ross Opert and Kelly Shaw who will bring the music and the meaning.  Below you can check out these songs in advance.  (past the videos are lyrics) “The Weight” by Thrice challenges us to look at our definitions of love; moving beyond feelings to a deeper place of expression.  “White Flag” by The Lakes takes us through the themes of pressure, control, and surrender.  Come join tomorrow night, 7pm in the GP Underground!

ever widening circle

dorothy dayWhat we would like to do is change the world–make it a little simpler for people to feed, clothe, and shelter themselves as God intended them to do. And, by fighting for better conditions, by crying out unceasingly for the rights of the workers, the poor, of the destitute–the rights of the worthy and the unworthy poor, in other words–we can, to a certain extent, change the world; we can work for the oasis, the little cell of joy and peace in a harried world. We can throw our pebble in the pond and be confident that its ever widening circle will reach around the world. We repeat, there is nothing we can do but love, and, dear God, please enlarge our hearts to love each other, to love our neighbor, to love our enemy as our friend.”

south asia to south africa: voices of action follow up

n596760158_324673_5277ashley/s.africaLast night was a really meaningful time hearing from Pamela & Ashley as they shared their hearts for people, and the struggles of practicing God’s love in broken places.  Their stories from South Africa and Nepal challenge us in so many ways!  At the very least, hopefully, we were all able to ask ourselves how we are participating in kingdom work today, here & now…  How is your hand on the plough?  Where could God be calling you to step in faith into a place where you can better share the love of Christ to humanity- even if that’s the person right in front of you?  Many of you wanted to read more about Pamela & Ashley’s lives, and track their work on their different blogs.  Pamela can be found on  http://www.restoredyouth.blogspot.com/ Ashley writes at http://www.reflectioninwater.blogspot.com/ Thanks ladies for spending an evening with us and being so open with your lives!

the hard path

hardpathSeveral weeks ago, we had a Sunday morning service revolving around the theme of suffering.  ’Where is God when it hurts?’ was a primary question in play.  Our good friends Jon & Julie Burns graciously shared their story, and the hard path they walked with their daughter Chloe’s leukemia.  This is really worthy to watch if you missed it… Probably the strongest stuff here is watching a husband & wife dialoguing so honestly about their pain, & hearing the very different ways they each continue to process together.  The live message portion is missing here, but if you really want to hear it, you can go to the WBCC site, and go under media : sermon archive : god loves us in the pain.
