Utah Boy Foundyes, its true.  Bear Grylls, from the Discovery show, MAN VS. WILD, is a true life saver.  Just ask this 9 year old who used everything Bear ever taught him to survive the harsh Utahbeargrylls wilderness.  Yes, Bear, we still believe.

love, relationships & the church? FINAL

dv1652004Today, we close our series based on a recent RELEVANT article, which among other things, gave one man’s reflection on the scene of love and relationships in the context of the church.  Each day we’ve been featuring your responses to a set of questions on this topic.  The questions remained the same, and each day we had a different person respond.  Single, Married, and everything in between….hopefully, we created some meaningful dialogue and shared some varied wisdom out of our community in this area! TODAY, ROBBY HORNER (good friend of Ben Watson’s), weighs in:

1. Describe for us generally your “status” (single, dating, engaged, married) and maybe your relationship story in a sentence or phrase (in a long term relationship, don’t date much, have gone out with lots of people, married your HS sweetheart, etc.)

Dating/long term relationship

2. What was your general reaction to Tim Holland’s experience in his relevant article, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye, Where Did it Go?”?

Predictable and unfortunate

3. In the article, Holland describes himself as “just another slow- moving evangelical dude.”  Whether you’re a guy or a girl—does this description of Christians (guys or girls) as non-committing, non risk-venturing, and even regressive in relationships seem accurate or exaggerated?  Explain…

It’s more accurate than exaggerated. Like it or not, the whole “relationship” stage of your life passes by very quickly for the majority of people. If you put off anything for later in life, you’ll obviously be Continue reading ‘love, relationships & the church? FINAL’

married) and maybe your relationship story in a sentence or phrase

(in a long term relationship, don’t date much, have gone out with

lots of people, married your HS sweetheart, etc.)

KELLY: dating, in a long-term relationship

2. What was your general reaction to Tim Holland’s experience in his

relevant article, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye, Where Did it Go?”?

KELLY: i feel like i could relate to Tim when he talks about his self-righteous phase and wanting to get away from drinking and dating. i understand where he is coming from, i did the same in high school.

3. In the article, Holland describes himself as “just another slow-

moving evangelical dude.”  Whether you’re a guy or a girl—does this

description of Christians (guys or girls) as non-committing, non risk-

venturing, and even regressive in relationships seem accurate or

exaggerated?  Explain…

KELLY: it seems accurate, but his case is exaggerated too far.  i once heard, from a couple in the church, that the only reason you date is Continue reading ‘love, relationships & the church? PART 4′

tornado sighting at the lake

tornadoIf you missed the party at the Kersting’s, we had a pretty crazy tornado sighting.  Robert caught it on his Iphone, and sent it to me and his mom with this quote: “Mom, we were almost taken up in the clouds yesterday like Elijah!”  Oh robert— good thing it went away…

1. Describe for us generally your “status” (single, dating, engaged, married) and maybe your relationship story in a sentence or phrase (in a long term relationship, don’t date much, have gone out with lots of people, married your HS sweetheart, etc.)

single, and recently divorced.

2. What was your general reaction to Tim Holland’s experience in his relevant article, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye, Where Did it Go?”?

TODAY, Katie Cooper weighs in:

1. Describe for us generally your “status” (single, dating, engaged, married) and maybe your relationship story in a sentence or phrase (in a long term relationship, don’t date much, have gone out with lots of people, married your HS sweetheart, etc.)

Single. I have dated a little, but have really only been in one serious relationship.

2. What was your general reaction to Tim Holland’s experience in his relevant article, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye, Where Did it Go?”?

It is interesting to think about a guy’s perspective in the matter, and while I never really felt the “Kiss dating goodbye” movement was being pushed on me, I have heard different thoughts on what a healthy Christian relationship should look like. I’m glad that this sparked more questions about the possible long-term effects of such a decision . Continue reading ‘love, relationships & the church? PART 2′

Awkward Questions From Kids on Jesus & God

Scripted?  We think so.  Still classic?  Absolutely

weekend wild

If you missed the Man V. Wild special with Will Ferrel, you can watch one segment here.  Was it a shameful ad for his new movie?  Absolutely.  Was it still pretty classic?  I’d say so.  You have to feel bad for a guy like Will Ferrell.  You get the feeling that he has a lot pressure to constantly be saying funny stuff.  That’s all good till you’re in the freezing Scandanavian wilderness!  You can tell he was working hard.  Unlike my wife, Cassie, who doesn’t have to work hard at all to watch an hour with Bear Grylls!

love, romance, and the state of finding someone "in" the church

datinggoodbyetrying to find true love can be a daunting experience…  this recent article (which you should read!) from relevantmagazine.com suggests that the message & culture within the church has often made it even harder to do it.  DO YOU AGREE?  While this article looks at the particular effects of the “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” fad of the late ’90′s, it also points to an ongoing issue.

unfortunately, this isn’t an issue we always have real conversation (beyond surface level and joking) about in our community.  To counter that trend, we’re going to explore this issue in depth next week by asking a similar set of questions to single, married, engaged, dating, and 6198-000285seeking people from our group.  What trends (good or bad) can we uncover in our local context?   As someone who was blessed with finding my love at a young age, I’m really curious & hopeful to hear some of your hearts on this issue (as I often can’t relate to the typical track!)   If you’re interested in weighing in, let me know.  For now, read the article and stay tuned!   -C
