Bell on Hosea and the Picture of Marriage…

Tomorrow night, Cassie will be teaching as we finish our look @ the book of Hosea together. Here’s a quote from Rob Bell’s book “Sex God” that many of you have read through. It captures the analogy of marriage that we’ve been exploring in this study really well:
The Ten Commandments are the… agreement between people and God about how they’re going to live together, which is why the first one deals with having other gods. It’s essentially an agreement that this relationship won’t work if they have other lovers. And for the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures, we find God referring back to these original vows. In the book of Hosea, God says to his people, “You cheated on me!” The whole book is a picture of how God’s people have been unfaithful to him. In one text God laments, “You were the bride of my youth.”…From the perspective of the Scriptures, then, a man and a woman coming together is a picture of God and his people coming together- the God of Exodus, the God who travels with his people in a cloud of smoke and fire. The God who is with his people.” -Rob Bell / Sex God / p. 133-134

Dawn of the millennium. A faded red Hawaiian shirt and a navy Kangol hat with box tape spelling “Y2K”. I kissed her with hope new like the day– and I certainly couldn’t tell you who took the picture. I was captured in the moment! We were told to prepare for the worst that New Year’s Eve, 1999— a potential failed computer grid that would bring our world into chaos. Some said it would be the dawn of the end times. But new beginnings that year weren’t nearly so dramatic. Change may come in one grand, sweeping moment… or it may not. Lately I’m trying to dig beyond the hype, and catch the sunrise kisses that are much more profound! Continue reading ‘Y2K & Sunrise Kisses Beyond the Hype’
okay, nothing could be further from the previous posted video on doogie howser. But…. it is MLK day, and this final bit of his final speech never fails to shake me up a bit. After visiting Memphis for a few days last month, and seeing the site of his assassination, King’s life took on a new meaning for me. enjoy: -C

marry this prostitute…

Starting this Thursday, for three weeks, we will take in and breathe out The Book of Hosea- the language is shocking, the picture is striking, and the message is one to wrestle with… God calls on one man to be joined with an adulterer. The marriage relationship, one of the bibles deepest and richest symbols, becomes an unlikely tool for God to expose the unfaithfulness of his people. But what’s the point?
