Election 08: McCain V. Obama and Tuesday's Choice

Going into next week’s historic election, we thought we’d offer two different perspectives from two good friends, Ben Watson and Lauren McLeary, about the Presidential candidates.  For many of us who’ve participated in discussion about the next president, there’s been a tendency to play into the negative, polarized nature of politics.  As a starting point to this feature, both Ben and Lauren agreed to the fact that people we know, love and respect will be voting either way next Tuesday.  Secondly, they both agreed that neither McCain nor Obama is ideal or will create perfect change.  Lastly, they attempted to include reasons there faith informed there vote while summarizing the reasons for their choice.  We hope that Ben and Lauren sharing will be helpful for you determine your own faith priorities that weigh into your votes.  Thanks guys, and happy voting…

Kelly Shaw - Spain

Kelly Shaw - Spain

Kelly Shaw, one of our own, is “venturing out” in the true sense of the phrase – she has packed up and headed to Spain to study for a semester abroad.  In this continuing feature, read Kelly’s thoughts on fear, excitement, faith and the true notion of community.  This is the second of several installments of her journaling.

weekly soul . chapter 9 . craig nason

This week we begin the 2nd half of Soul Graffiti as we enter Part 3: The Greater Wholeness of Genesis-Vision.  Thursday we will look at the brief section intro as well as Chapter 9: The Tiny Seed and the Big Tree.  You’ll meet a couple of Scandrette’s more diverse and colorful friends.  This chapter has some interesting parallels to the mentalities at play in the upcoming election. (but please don’t let that stop you from reading, this is a GREAT chapter!)  Craig offers his reflections on the reading in this week’s Weekly Soul….

worth believing…

While we know many of you are immersed in school books, and many others are struggling just to keep up with Soul Graffiti (and many others hate reading!), we’d like to encourage the discipline of reading spiritual books by occasionally sharing with you about a book someone is reading.  This month, Shaya Lawrence is giving us her review of Doug Pagitt‘s book, A Christianity Worth Believing  Pagitt is the pastor of Solomon’s Porch in Minnesota, as well as an author and speaker for Emergent Village.

i've been waiting for this moment…

Only one week to Election ’08.  But who cares, we’re sick of the election dominating the news.  Actually, we will be featuring some stuff on that later this week, but for now…  It’s also less than a week to Halloween- and that’s what we want to think about this Monday.  May the primate beats inspire you deeply:

Inspired…

Each of us has our own way of expressing the way we perceive God and the world around us.  Scandrette, in this week’s Soul Graffiti chapter, says that “we were made to create goodness and beauty in the world, blurring the line between fine art and artful living.”  Here are a few artful expressions of faith straight from the West Bowles CG.

Sunday Morning – by Alissa Smith

The smell of must and dust and
hallowed redemption
meanders around faded blue
pews that creak,
Shhhhh,
as I slide in at the back.
The Holy Bible and the Worship Hymnal stand
at attention, side by side, in stolid salute
to the thumbs that,
with a wet lick,
peruse their pages.
Lowered lashes grace
pale cheeks, as dust and prayers
filter through fingers of light, falling
like early snowflakes, the ones
that come on the last day of October, before the night
of winter, when the air makes a freeze of your lungs.
Sacred words bounce from eaves to floor, and down
to me, in the blue pew
the one at the back,
that one that creaks,
Shhhhh.

Seattle Brew & Tulane Too…

Our feature for The Seasonal this week is a double interview with two of our college freshman.  Ali Nipert is a freshman at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA and Tasha Christy is in her first semester at Seattle Pacific University in the Seattle, WA.  They are both venturing out in their own ways in their first fall away from Colorado.  We asked them both some questions, many of them the same…  Tasha kept it to the point, while Ali gave us slow, southern-cooked answers with a heavy accent.  Enjoy the dual-cast below…
