this interesting article made the front of cnn.com this week…. as in, the front story– bigger heading than the BP coverage. As you know, those of us who went to Powell recently read his newest book together, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years (which many of us highly recommend!). Cool to see such a great guy getting positive coverage from such a big media group…

stuff christians like…. R rated movies?

Jonathan Acuff’s new book, Stuff Christians Like, is getting a lot of attention for its humorous treatment of the “goofy” parts of Christian culture & faith. Using satire to make fun of some pretty classic topics, Acuff allows the Christian community to laugh at themselves, especially some of the stuff we often wish was a million miles from being associated with “us”. Since we’re in the middle of our Film Fest, here’s a taste of the book as Acuff takes on R-rated movies:
Watching R-rated movies … but only if they’re violent
For Christians, it’s completely OK to watch R-rated movies, but only if they got that rating because of violence. If they’re rated R because someone is getting their head cut off or there’s a battle scene that’s so gory, blood splashes on the camera lens, don’t worry. God’s cool with that. However, if the movie is rated R because of sexuality … well, I hope you enjoy your fold-out couch bed in hell. It’s gonna be a hot one, my friend. A hot one, indeed.
I’m not sure where this rule came from, but it’s true. Not only do Christians watch violent R-rated movies, we’ll quote them from the pulpit, build sermon series around them—even show clips from them during service. I call it “The Braveheart Rule,” and my theory is that it’s because of the Old Testament.
Have you ever read any of the Old Testament? It’s hardcore. Samson smashes people in the head with a donkey jawbone. A priest runs a spear through two people having sex. David carries Goliath’s head around like a bowling ball. It’s violent. I think Christians read that and assume: “Cool. God’s down with some wanton violence. R-rated movies, here we come!”
But if there’s any nudity, if a single nipple makes a cameo at any point, forget it. Throw that piece of nonsense in the trash. That is horrible. We’ll have to wait until they show the edited version on TBS.
film fest week 3: rocket science shines

This Thursday we’re continuing our 2010 Acacia Film Fest with Ryan Welborn hosting the independent movie ROCKET SCIENCE. This small budget, 2007 indie movie received warm reviews but didn’t succeed well at the box office. Directed by Jeffery Blitz (directed the documentary Spellbound), the flavor of the movie is similar to other “coming of age” movies like Juno or even Little Miss Sunshine. The story tracks Hal Hefner’s attempt to make it in the world of high school debate despite his own stuttering problems. Aside from a few unnecessary tangents, this movie really hit on all cylinders for me. Well acted, smartly written, and the ability to make you laugh & think deep. After hearing some of Welborn’s thoughts last night on what he’ll be sharing Thursday, I’m really excited for the whole group. I won’t spoil it, but I really hope you’ll all get a chance to join tomorrow & see the movie too! Here’s the trailer: -Craig
sex or jesus: what’s more popular?

This map below comes from the website Floating Sheep (www.floatingsheep.org). FS takes any number of topics to investigate, and then searches for Google Maps placemarks containing specific keywords and records the number of results generated for each keyword. The results provide one glimpse of what internet users (in the aggregate) think about particular places. And they’re super interesting. And no, they’re not all serious or religious. Check out this one which shows where in the U.S bars outnumber grocery stores & vice-versa. They call it a way to track America’s beer belly… what’s going on in Wisconsin & Illinois??? But the map below looks worldwide @ notions about different religious system vs. sex. Very interesting…
